Jack, I am a long time admirer or yours! You truly are the “Godfather of Fitness”. I used to watch your program as a young girl, but never actually did the exercises. It wasn’t until I was in my 40′s that I discovered the gym and how wonderful exercise can make you feel, and how much good it can do for you. Your sound advice in the 1960′s is just as accurate in 2009…especially your clip on Sugarholics. I loved it and it is SO true. I only wish i can be as vital and healthy as you when I am in my 90′s!! may you live another fifty years!!!

  3. Karen,

Thank you for taking the time to write to Jack LaLanne. He wanted me to tell you that he was thrilled that you are exercising.

  4. anna says:

    Hi Jack,

I do the facial excercises and find them great, take about great you look great at your age, how do you feel? What vitamins do you take?
    from anna

  5. Claire says:

    Dear Anna,

Keep up those facial exercises. Jack looks and feels great. I just spoke to him when he stopped by the office this afternoon, and he told me that he takes every vitamin from A-Z. Jack knows what works well for his body and he takes a higher number of vitamins and minerals than the average person on a daily basis. However, most people don’t need that much and a good multi vitamin is your best bet, especially if you are new to taking vitamins. Remember to check with your doctor and keep him/her informed of what you plan to do and get a medical opinion before making any lifestyle changes. “Exercise is King, Nutrition is Queen, Put them Together and You’ve Got a Kingdom!”

    Healthfully,
    BeFit Enterprises/Claire :)

  6. Jack: You are a fantastic inspiration. A true fitness devotee, and am amazing athlete who never got mixed up in the steroid mess. You always kept the dual goal of health and fitness, rather than focusing totally on appearance at the expense of your well being and vibrant good health. I salute and thank you for inspiring me since I was teenager. Continued health, happiness and good luck.
    Respectfully, Bob McDermott

  7. Larry Sawyer says:

    Hi Jack,
You’re a real inspiration! I’m a 48 year-old man, just about to turn 49, and I’m in good shape at 5’9″ and 140 lbs. I run, lift weights and stay active while I watch my diet and take vitamins. I even ran a marathon two years ago. Your advice is the way I try to live my life. But I want to give myself a great birthday present for my 50th birthday: washboard abs! What exercises would be the best way to get that great abdominal definition– just sit-ups, or do I need to do some other exercise? Thanks for leading the way to great health,
    Larry

  8. Jack LaLanne says:

    Robert,

I am so thrilled and honored to have touched your life in such a positive manner. Keep up your workouts and remember that anything in life is possible, if YOU make it happen!

    Healthfully,
    Jack LaLanne

  9. Jack LaLanne says:

    Larry,

You have got to have a good diet. To get abs you have to work the whole body. You have to get rid of the fat in your body and get your heart pumping. You can exercise ten hours a day, if you don’t eat right you will never be able to get the nice washboard abs.

    Healthfully Yours,
    ~Jack LaLanne~

  10. Larry says:

Jack, I read your answer and did some research, and now I understand. The right balance of protein and carbs allows all that good muscle-building exercise to actually build muscle! And then with more muscle, the fat starts to come off. I can already see some good changes I can make to my diet and lifestyle even now. Thank you for your insight. I, like many thousands of others, wish you many more years of happy, healthy, positive living.
    Warm Regards,
    Larry

  11. Wanda King says:

    Dear, Jack and Elaine
I truly enjoy seeing pictures of both of you. At your age Jack, you are a real inspiration to people everywhere. I see so many people who are not close to your age; that are sick and don’t excise. So, when I see you and your wife, I know there is hope for me and others! I’m currently 48 years old, but I’m out of shape and my weight is 28 pounds over my normal weight. However, I’m heathly, so the doctor told me! When I saw your website, it gives me hope to change.
May God bless you and your family.
    Sincerly, Wanda

  12. Claire says:

    Wanda,

Thank you for taking the time to write to the LaLanne’s. They are thrilled and honored to have touched you in such a positive manner. Keep on Keeping on, and remember, “Anything in Life is Possible if YOU Make it Happen!”

  13. Hi Jack-

Whenever I think about a handcuffed 70 year young man pulling 70 boats with 70 people I have to smile. Nobody can deny you. When I see you still kickin 94, I’m really smiling. Thanks for never giving up. Peace.

  16. Jeffrey Port says:

    Dear Jack and Elaine,

I always wanted to write and thank you both(Jack & Elaine) for all your hard work over the years.

I am 46 years old this year and always watched your show as a very young boy. I used to think I was something to exercise with Jack and l loved to see dog your helping you.

I watched my diet and stopped eating sugar and love fresh grown vegetable and fruits. I grew my own for a long time.

I joined the army 27 1/2 years ago and could still run under 5 minute miles at over 40 years old.

My daily routine was stretching out twice a day for 40 minutes each, compimented with pushups and situps each day.

When younger(20′s)I would run three times a week, 14-16 miles before work in the a.m.

I teach soldiers how to produce drinking water from oceans, steam, wells, so our troops in Iraq and around the world will be healthy and come home safe.

I was in an accident that injured my hip and legs which interferred with my running, but I usually walk 4 to 6 miles a day on average, plus my normal movement during training soldiers.

Jack was my inspiration to always do my best in all aspects in my life. I try to pass on my knowledge and hope to inspire the young soldiers in my own way as Jack inspired me.

I was at Morro bay, eight years ago while training soldiers at Ft. Hunter-Leggett, CA. I took at picture of the rock also.

God bless you both, Jack and Elaine.

  17. Carson H. says:

Hi Jack, I’m a 27 year old man and I’ve been weight training, with 2 full days of rest in between for several months. I am large-framed and 6′ 2″ 220 lbs. (in my birthday suit). I was wondering how many grams of protein you think I should get every day. I work a somewhat physically demanding job (on my feet, moving heavy objects) anywhere from 8-12 hours per day.

I always make sure to get 15-20 minutes of intense cardio daily, and usually take hour long walks or bike rides in the evening. I’m working on getting some fat off that I put on the last year or so too. I looked my best before at around 195 lbs. but that looked a bit skinny on my frame- so I’m trying to put 15 lbs. of muscle on while lowering my body fat into the single digits (I’m about 17% body fat right now).

I used to be a 295 lb. food addict and I must say that just thinking about you has helped me get over a lot of my old cravings. If I’m thinking about junk food I try to ask myself “what would Jack think about that?” and then poof! The craving is gone. I admire so much about you and what you stand for. Thank you so much for dedicating yourself to being a positive influence. Again, if you could give me a suggestion on daily protein intake it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

    -Carson Hess

  18. Claire says:

    Hello Carson,
I’m Cheryl, one of Jack’s assistants. It sounds like you stay quite physically active. Jack’s advice is to always seek professional help when changing your diet and it’s
always a good idea to get the input of a nutritionist for your
food and protein issues. Also, if you haven’t had a physical in a
while it’s a very good idea to get one. Jack’s protein intake has varied
over the years along with his workout regimen and age and he feels it’s better
to have a one on one with someone who can size up your exercise and
food issues and discuss them with you face to face. He does admire your
willpower in staying away from junk food and for doing regular exercise.
Take care and keep up the good work!!

What plans do you have for your “95th” next month, I’d love to attend the fun!

  20. Greg Mackey says:

    Jack,
I’m sure you’ve heard this before – but when it comes to my bodybuilding/physical culture influences – of course there’s the usual suspects of Lou Ferrigno, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lee Haney et al, but when it came to longevity and pumping iron in later years I had three examples – Albert Beckels, Joe Weider and YOU! I know you’ve done stuff with Joe (seen you in many an issue of M&F) but have you ever rapped with Albert?

  21. Paula G. says:

    Dear Mr. and Mrs. LaLanne:

Thank you for giving my father the knowledge and power of exercising and eating healthy. Dad had a tragic up bringing and did not have a positive male role model in his life, except for you! My dad is now 72 (looks 62) and has always been an advocate for health by positive example. Dad takes no medicines, he rides a bicycle approximately 25 miles a week, which he just recently switched to an Recumbent bike, due to traffic conditions, my dad also faithfully works out with free weights and bands daily.

Dad was in a motorcycle accident two years ago, and recovered wonderfully, but had it not been for your inspiration ingrained in his mind all these years I don’t know if would have been back on top of his game today. The doctors and nurses were absolutely amazed with his upper body strength, and that he could lift himself off the table, that he could swing his legs up in front of his face, that he could do full knee bends without any assistance going up or down, that dad could still do push ups, etc., and he proudly gave your teachings credit for most everything he has learned. He is in awesome shape inside and out and he looks and feels great!!!

I have six brother and sisters who are headed into our 40′s and 50′s. We all are healthy and exercise is just a natural part of our lives, and as our children are growing it is their gift for a long and healthy life too!

Thank so much for the gift you have so passionately shared with your fans and friends.

  22. Patsy Carriere says:

    Hi Jack,
I remember you as alittle girl. I believe you had a studio in Berkeley near the bowling alley. We would rollerskate in say hi grab the chin bar and be off. Years ago, too many to count!

We also have the same birthday. September 26th

I have lived a life style of heath and fitness all my life. Was a competive swimmer. Now at 63 am a fitness trainer to show other folks how “easy” it can be!

My husband and I sea kayak and off course I have my own gym at the house. Smith, cables, free weights. Aquired over the years for “retirement” whatever that might be!

    Thank you,
    Patsy Carriere

  23. Joseph says:

    Dear Mr. Lalanne,
God bless you for all you have done, and taught these so many years. I am 53, and have followed you since the 70′s (used to watch your show as a kid in the 60′s). To say that you are an inspiration is a complete understatement. At 53 I bench pressed 340lbs last fall, squated 350lbs, and just love to lift weights, run, and eat supper heathly (am 6’2″ about 215lb). I follow the moto, eat to live, don’t live to eat. I also love to run, and walk (about 5.3 miles a day), and love to swim. I think what you have done, and are doing is remarkable. You are a walking laboratory of the life sciences of health and longevity. I hope that you are being studied by the best minds out there, because so much can be learned from you. When the gerontologist study people or various advanced ages for various principles of vibrant health and long life, it seems most of what they convey is anecdotal at best. Your body, and what you have learned should be completely documented I am convinced what you have done and are doing could benefit generations to come. I know that you have and are already doing that. But, I believe there is so much more to learn from you. I hope everything you have done is documented (completely). I for one would devour anything and everything we can learn from you. I know that much of the specifics of your personal regimine over the years remains private. I know what you are doing is much more advanced than most could either comprehend, or appreciate. I would love to know everything from A – Z, suppliments, weight training, swiming, diet, everything. Especially what you have done to adapt at various stages of life. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for making yourself an experiement for the advancement of heath and fitness for all generations. You are a great man Mr. Lalanne. PS, I have read all that Paul & Patricia Bragg have produced, as well as Norman Walker, and many of the more current writers.

My inspiration! Exercise and healthful eating has allowed me to be in better shape (and lower weight) at 30 than I was in college. I just bought my power juicer today to kick start a 7 day sugar/caffeine/processed foods detox starting promptly at 7am tomorrow.
Jack inspired me – and I inspired my mom, who has lost 42 pounds this year so far (at age 60) and is nearly to her high school weight. She has officially stopped taking her blood pressure/cholesterol meds thanks to her healthy living. Its not a miracle, just good old fashioned hard work.

    Jack you are a rockstar.

  26. Dr. Kim Gorman says:

Dear Mr. LaLanne, and a belated Happy 95th Birthday! You are a hero of mine. I remember watching my mother do her exercises each day in the late fifties in Atlanta, GA. Since then, I’ve heard of your amazing athletic feats on birthdays, seen your juicing testimonials and heard your great line: “If man made it, don’t eat it!” I love your smile, your energy and your dedication to helping others be healthy. THANK YOU and God bless your days with continued strength, flexibility and fitness.

  27. kara says:

    Dear Mr. LaLanne:

I remember watching you when I was a little girl, while my mom excerised. You were and still are years ahead of your time. Any way, I’m 43 and have been 20 pounds overweight for years ( mainly from sweets) I just watched one of your old shows where you mentioned the magical three letter word “Try.” And that’s what I’m going to do… Try. I plan to watch your old shows every day to inspire me. Thank you. I just forwarded your web site to my dad who had a mini stroke last week; he is not at healthy weight either. Thank you always. I will let you know how I make out.

    Warmest regards,

    Kara

  33. Jerry Jones says:

Jack, I was looking for an exercise and healthy life-style web site and remembered seeing you years ago and googled your site. Glad I was able to find you. I am 70 years old and for the past 10 years fell out off the exercise routine. During this time, I developed an overweight and diseased body, and developed diabetes and heart problems. Since last year I have lost 40 pounds and trying for 20 more to get down to a comfortable weight that the Doctor thinks is good for me. I just bought your books and juicer and will start using to go further and try to emulate your life style. You are an inspiration! God Bless and Keep you.

  34. Claire says:

    Jerry,
Sounds like you are doing a great job! Good luck on the next 20 lbs. we know you can do it!

  36. Donna M Frazier says:

    Hi Mr LaLanne,
I am a 53 yr old female with some health problems I pray you can help me with either with juicing or vitamins and or a weight lose program. I have hardening of the arteries in my right leg. I’ve never smoked or drink so I don’t know how I got this unless it’s from poor dieting.I weight 289. please if possible write me back with some help on these problems you don’t know how much I will appreciate all you can help me with so that I can enjoy my life again.I really adore you and your wife. you both look great. May Our GOD continue to Bless You both in maraculous ways. DMF

  37. Claire says:

    Hi Donna,

Thanks for taking the time to write Jack. Since Jack is not a Medical Doctor, he is unable to give advice of this type. He suggests that you check with your health care professional.

Jack has two books out that you may be interested in, one called, “Revitalize Your Life” and his newest called, “Live Young Forever”

Both of which are very inspirational and informative. They can be found on our website under the ‘Online Store’ Tab.

Remember, “Anything in Life is Possible, if YOU Make it Happen!”

  38. Cynthia Smith says:

This may not be the place to write this but…My upper back is hurting so I was doing yoga-stretching this morning when my husband came down and said his hurts too, and then commented that we are getting old ( 54 yrs.,both ). To which I said no, we need a good mattress and to exercise/stretch more.He then said “oh so you don’t think that getting old has anything to do with it”? To which I replied ,” not really”. That ” probably 80 % of the people in this country are out of shape and sick because of their diets and lack of keeping their bodies in shape.” To this he replied, “Oh, so you think Jack LaLanne never wakes up in the morning with aches and pains ?” To this I yelled ” He’s in better shape than us !” So I would love it if Jack could e-mail my “54yr. old “aging” husband Wil, and save him before it is to late !
Please write back and I’ll promptly give Willy your answer.

Thanks Jack , I think your awesome !

    Sincerely,

    Cynthia C. Smith

  39. Claire says:

    Cynthia,

Thanks for taking the time to write Jack.

I read Jack your email and this is what he wanted me to tell you…”Age has nothing to do with it, and your mental outlook has everything to do with it! I am certaintly not going to tell you that I can pull 70 boats with 70 people as I did at age 70, at this stage in my life. But I will tell you that I do the best I can with the equipment I have!!! So take each day at a time, do as much as you can, and keep a positive outlook. And remember, ANYTHING in life is possible, if YOU make it happen!”

  41. Elizabeth says:

    Dear Jack,

I desperately need your help. I am ill and want to learn how to start juicing, but I have NEVER liked vegetables. I’m just being honest…I can’t help it….I literally hate vegetables, and I want to change this. I did buy your juicer (great juicer!) and mixed up some vegetables in it. I think it was a carrot and apple together, but just about died when I tasted it. It was absolutely horrible tasting. It tasted so flat and “tasteless”. I tried adding salt, but I know that wasn’t the right thing to do. It didn’t help, anyway. What can I do to get accustomed to eating vegetables? I honestly do want to change and get healthy. I just don’t know how, since I hate vegetables so much! I’ve tried to keep a positive attitude about them, but nothing seems to work. Please help.

  42. Claire says:

    Elizabeth,
May we first suggest…maybe you could visit your local farmers market or health food store, to get the freshest product possible. This does make a big difference with taste. Also, you could check to find what is and is not in season, and find foods that are in the height of their season, to ensure the best quality!
Also, pineapple is very sweet and pretty much can make any tasting juice taste sweet and wonderful.

    Hope this is useful,
    Claire

  43. Claire says:

    Hi George,

Thanks for taking the time to write us. Many people have lost weight with juicing, so maybe you could try that. You could also try getting a calorie counter…to help teach you about the calories you are taking in. ie, an apple has about 100 calories and so does a potato…Remember to make haste slowly…Instead of losing a lot of weight in a hurry, get yourself on a good lifestyle and you will find the pounds dropping off. How much weight you lose per week depends on the person.

    Good Luck,
    Healthfully,
    Claire
